eThekwini launches Smart City App

eThekwini Metro, South Africa’s third largest municipality, has launched the DynaTech Smart City Mobile applicationwhich enables users to send complaints to their local municipality using the app.

The App alsoallows users to track their complaints and view if similar complaints have been laid by other users.

The App is aimed at improving service delivery and commutation between the municipality and residents.

Users can use the App to inform the municipality of service delivery issues in their area.

The App, which allows users to interact with the municipality in real time, is available for Durban residents and surrounding areas.

Chinese national charged with hacking US defense contractors

A Chinese businessman has been indicted in California on charges he hacked the computer systems of Boeing Co and other US defense contractors and stole confidential plans for military aircraft, federal prosecutors said.

Mobile operator MTN recently held its third annual App business awards in Johannesburg and honoured innovation in the tech industry.

Live Inspect App is designed to assist short-term insurers in performing effective inspections on vehicles.

Wild Tracker won the most innovative business award.

My Belongings won the best Android App in the consumer category, SuperSport won the best iOS App in the consumer category and SyncMobile won the best iOS App in the Enterprise category.

Wild life tracker won the most innovative App , Zapper won the best Microsoft platform APP and ReaVaya, designed to help commuters with train routes, won the best Garage Developer App.

MTN says the growing number of App developers in South Africa can confidently compete with their international peers.

M-pesa debut in Europe

M-Pesa, the technology that enables consumers to transfer money using their mobile phones, is quickly gaining popularity in Europe.

The technology is widely popular in Kenya where consumers, who have no access to banks, transfer money using the mobile system.

M-Pesa was launched in Kenya in 2007.

Vodafone has now introduced the technology to Romania in Europe where it is expected to complement existing mobile payment platforms.

The system is expected to gain popularity in Romania where a large population still use cash for most transactions.

Google, Asian telecoms to build $300m undersea cable to Japan

Search engine Google Inc and five Asian telecom and communications companies have agreed to invest about $300 million to develop and operate a trans-Pacific cable network connecting the United States to Japan.

The cable network to be named “FASTER” will have an initial capacity of 60 terabits per second and will connect Los Angeles, Portland, San Francisco, Oregon and Seattle to Chikura and Shima in Japan.
