SABC Board seeks to avoid previous mistakes

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The SABC board says it wants to avoid the pitfalls encountered by its predecessor. Briefing Parliament’s Communications Portfolio Committee on Tuesday, Board members said they do not want to get too involved in operational issues at the public broadcaster.

MPs met with the Board to get an update on engagements which took place between unions and the SABC Board.

MPs across party lines wanted specific information about issues affecting staff members at the SABC, and how the Board was dealing with those.

The SABC Board Chair Bongumusa Makhathini says certain processes need to be followed.

“Part of the reason why the SABC got to the challenge they are in, there was no respect of the mandate, no respect of processes and procedure, and we want to plead with the PCC to help us restore order.”

Labour unions met with the committee last month to complain about labour relations in the organisation.

Among others the committee wanted detailed information on the latest developments surrounding the dismissal of employees who were implicated in allegations of medical aid fraud.

The deputy minister of Communications, Pinky Kekana, was also not in support of how the Board handled matters.

“Rather over report than under…because now this is a fruitless, wasteful engagement, because we came here we don’t have answers. I am part of it. I also don’t have answers.”

The Chairperson of the Committee Humphrey Maxegwana called on the Board to provide more detailed information.

“Let us have meat in this report. Develop a clear report so that we understand the report properly.”
