SABC board prioritising appointment of permanent executive members

The Chairperson of the SABC board, Bongumusa Makhathini says their most crucial priority is to appoint permanent executive members to run the organisation.

The SABC board says it’s committed to carrying out its tasks as laid out in the Broadcasting Act.  This follows the decision by Communications Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane to appeal a High Court judgement that gave the SABC board the right to appoint the broadcaster’s top executives.

The SABC is currently seeking senior counsel legal advice on the judgement and the grounds for the appeal detailed in the papers filed by the Minister of Communications, in particular, those relating to the appointment of the top three executives of the SABC.

“Immediately when we have got the legal guidance we will then have an engagement with the Minister in terms of what is the fast lawful process that we need to follow to fill these positions. So there is quite a high level of alignment in terms of why we should prioritise the appointment of the executives. We engaged with the minister as the board that we are quite aligned in terms of what we need as the SABC in terms of those skills, experience and competencies we are looking for. If there’s alignment I’m sure we should proceed with these appointments in a speedy manner,” says Makhathini.
