SAA’s commercial strategy weak: Jarana

It’s been a month since the new CEO of South African Airways (SAA) Vuyani Jarana has been at the helm of the country’s national carrier.

The airliner is an important transport enabler and an important brand for the country – but has been marred with governance challenges and on Wednesday, Parliament heard that the company’s losses would far exceed what was initially projected.

Jarana says when he got to SAA he had to look at how an airline business makes and loses money so that he can understand why the airline is not making money.

“One of the key things that I found is that the commercial strategy is an area of SAA’s greatest weakness, it is vulnerable and as a business you need to know how to engage with your customers.”
