The South African women cricket team is using the 10-day camp at Cricket South Africa’s Centre for Excellence in Pretoria to fine-tune for their tour of the West Indies.

Coach Hilton Moreeng says their focus is on improving their batting which will be crucial to win the three-match One-Day International series.

The Proteas need to do well against the West Indies in that series as points will determine qualification for the 2021 Women’s Cricket World Cup.

The Proteas are second from bottom on an ICC Women’s championship log featuring the top eight cricketing nations such as Pakistan, England and India.

The three top teams on the log, including hosts of the 2021 Women Cricket World Cup, New Zealand, will qualify for the tournament.

Winning the ODI series against the West Indies, will move the Proteas from the bottom of the group into the top four, improving their chances of qualification.

“The first three ODI’s is going to count towards qualification so for is very important to make sure that we start c9ollecting points and start going up on the log,” says Moreeng.

Touring the West Indies will also prepare the Proteas for the conditions where the ICC’s Women T20 will be played in November.

The tournament will be contested by 10 nations with the West Indies the defending champions.

“The tour that we are taking to the West Indies is going to be in one of the toughest conditions to be able to give everyone a chance to bowl and to bat because it’s an area that we feel we need to improve on.”

The Proteas will play the first match of the ODI series against the West Indies on September the 16th, with their tour ending on October the sixth with the fifth and final T20 International.
