South Africa has welcomed a Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran, which commits both sides to an immediate and permanent end to military operations and a pledge to avoid further conflict or threats of force.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation says all regional actors should respect the de-escalation and work towards full implementation of the agreement, paving the way for lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.
South Africa has also welcomed efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, ease global oil pressures, and lift sanctions on Iran.
It has thanked mediators including Pakistan, Oman, and Qatar for helping secure the deal, and called for continued dialogue to resolve outstanding issues.
