The South African Weather Services says severe thunderstorms are expected over KwaZulu-Natal this afternoon.
Some parts of the province have already experienced hail storms. Hail the size of golf balls have fallen in Pietermaritzburg.
Weather forecaster Thandiwe Gumede says areas over the whole province will be affected by heavy downpours that might lead to localised flooding.
“Severe thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by strong damaging wind, heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding, hail as well as excessive lightning. Also taking into consideration that those storms have already started in some parts of the interior including areas like Pietermaritzburg, as well as over the south east parts, including areas like Harding. Proceeding all the way through into the coastal areas like Port Edward and Margate. Reduced visibility is also expected to be accompanied by storms.”
