SA takes over SADC chairmanship

South Africa has officially taken over from Swaziland as the new chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC ) Council of Ministers.

The handing over ceremony was conducted in Pretoria, where the council is meeting in preparation for the 37th Ordinary summit of Heads of States over the weekend.

As the new chair of the council, South Africa will amongst others, convene SADC meetings, lead and update member states on implementation of policies as well as represent the region in multinational forums.

In her acceptance speech, International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana Mashabane indicated that Pretoria will use the opportunity to further regional developmental goals.
