Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to correct the total government expenditure on deporting undocumented migrants over the last two financial years, in accordance with Minister Schreiber’s parliamentary response.

Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber says the government has spent R175 million on deporting undocumented migrants to their countries of origin in the past two financial years.

The figure has been revised from an earlier reported R17 billion.

He revealed this in a written reply to Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Member of Parliament (MP) Liezl van der Merwe’s question.

Schreiber says the majority of deported foreign nationals were from Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

He also says that foreign nationals from South America, Europe and Asia were among those deported during the period.
