SA reports 12 222 new COVID-19 cases, death toll surpasses 60 000 mark

South Africa has recorded 12 222 new COVID-19 cases, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 1 941 119.

This increase represents a 28.3 % positivity rate. The Gauteng province accounts for the majority of new cases (69%), followed by the Western Cape (7%).

Pressure continues to pile up on health workers in Gauteng hospitals:

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported a further 138 COVID-19 related deaths, bringing total fatalities to 60 038 to date.

An increase of 512 hospital admissions has been reported in the past 24 hours and 13 011 903 tests have been conducted in both public and private sectors.
