SA reports 10 008 new cases and further 190 COVID-19 related deaths

South Africa has reported 10 008 new cases of coronavirus infections, recording a cumulative total of 2 533 466 confirmed cases on Sunday.

With a further 190 COVID-19 related deaths, the death toll rises to 74 813.

The Western Cape has recorded 2 913 new coronavirus cases followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 2 270 and Gauteng with 1 690 new cases.

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, 43 818 tests were conducted in the last 24 hrs. The country’s positivity rate is at 22.8%.

Western Cape healthcare system under pressure

The number of active COVID-19 cases in the Western Cape is at nearly 45 000. The province’s healthcare system remains under pressure amid the peak of the third wave.

Nearly 16 000 deaths have been registered in the province since the start of the pandemic. More than 1.2 million vaccines have so far been administered in the province.
