The Health Department has reported 1 690 new COVID-19 infections and 81 deaths, taking the total number of infections to 1 502 367 and the death toll to 48 940.
Gauteng has reported the most number of deaths.
“The Eastern Cape 3, Free State 5, Gauteng 29, KwaZulu-Natal 23, Mpumalanga 6 and the Western Cape 15,” the department says in a statement.
There were no fatalities reported overnight in Limpopo, Northern Cape and the North West provinces.

The Health Ministry has conveyed condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones to the virus, while also thanking the healthcare workers who treated them.
“Our recoveries now stand at 1 409 553, representing a recovery rate of 93.8%,” says the department.
It says 28 722 tests were conducted overnight – taking the total number of tests done in the country so far to 8 867 659.
The total number of vaccines administered, since the country’s vaccination drive began on Wednesday, is 10 414.
