SA reports 1 385 new COVID-19 cases, 59 deaths

South Africa has recorded 1 385 new coronavirus infections in the last 24-hour cycle, taking the total number to 1 574 370.
The country has also recorded 59 new COVID-19-related fatalities. This brings the total number of deaths to 54 125.

“Eastern Cape 3, Free State 8, Gauteng 30, KwaZulu-Natal 13, Limpopo 5, Mpumalanga 0, North West 0, Northern Cape 0 and Western Cape 0,” says the Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, in a statement.

The recovery rate remains at 95% and 10 508 510 tests have been conducted to date countrywide. Of these, 26 934 were undertaken overnight.

The latest statistics come amid fears of a third wave. Free State health authorities have expressed concern over a surge in cases in the province.

The province says most infections have so far been reported in Mangaung Metro and Fezile Dabi District. It has attributed the latest increase to school clusters and social gatherings linked to the Easter holidays.
