SA records over 790 000 positive COVID-19 cases

The Health Ministry says the total number of people who have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) in South Africa has topped 790 000 after a further 2 302 people were confirmed to have the virus in the most recent period.

The ministry says in a statement that 58 people have died – taking the overall death toll to 21 535.

The ministry says 32 people in the Eastern Cape have died and 15 in the Western Cape.

There are concerns in particular about the spread of the virus along the Garden Route and in Nelson Mandela Bay.

The national government has urged South Africans to continue wearing masks, practice social distancing, and regular hand washing to avoid a big second wave of the virus.
