SA reports record 14 046 new coronavirus cases, 411 new deaths on Wednesday

South Africa has recorded 14 046 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday – one of the highest in months, taking the total number of cases to date to 954 258.

The COVID-19 death toll has also reached 25 657 with 411 more coronavirus-related deaths reported. Most deaths were recorded in the Western Cape 171 followed by the Eastern Cape 101 deaths. KwaZulu-Natal also registered 90 deaths; Gauteng 34; Mpumalanga and North West reported 6 each, with Free State 3.

Recoveries now stand at 811 372.

In a statement, the Health Department says all provinces, with the exception of the Eastern Cape, continue to report increases in their cases “with KwaZulu Natal, Western Cape and Gauteng Province registering the largest increases and comprising 81% of the new cases today (30%, 28% and 23% respectively).”

The Department urges citizens to take every precaution necessary as “we celebrate the festive season and look for reprieve from a tough year,”
