SA records more than 500 COVID-19 deaths for the second day in a row

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases says a further 523 people have died from COVID 19-related complications in South Africa in the latest 24-hour reporting period. This takes the death toll to 71 431.

A total of 13 751 new coronavirus cases have been reported in the country, putting the positivity rate at 24.6%.

The Western Cape has the highest increase of new cases at 3 968 followed by Gauteng with 3 655.

Meanwhile, the mining sector has started an aggressive vaccination campaign to slow the spread of COVID-19.  

Minister of Mineral Resources Gwede Mantashe and Acting Health Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi visited the Sibanye Stillwater mine in North West to monitor the vaccination rollout campaign at mines.  

Mining is one of the industries declared as essential. It has also been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic and recorded more than 40 000 cases to date, with 549 deaths. 

Minister of Mineral Resources Gwede Mantashe says the vaccination of mine workers should long have been prioritised.
