SA records 887 new cases, 10 deaths on Saturday

South Africa has recorded 887 new COVID-19 cases in the latest 24-hour reporting cycle by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 929 175.

NICD says the coronavirus test positivity rate remains at 2,8%  in the latest 24 hour reporting period. The test positivity rate has been gradually increasing in the last few days.

The NICD says another 10 people have died from COVID 19 and the death toll now stands at 89 572.

The number of recoveries stands at 2 820 994. Experts have been warning of a possible fourth wave of coronavirus towards the end of the year.

Those who are eligible are encouraged to get the vaccine as it offers strong protection against coronavirus and is considered safe.

The Health Ministry says over 35 000 vaccines were administered in the last 24 hour reporting period and the total number of doses given to people stands at over 24 600 000.

The Ministry says almost 14 million people over the age of 18 are now fully vaccinated. Health journalist Mia Malan says in a tweet that this is close to 35 percent of the population over 18.

People are also urged to continue wearing masks and avoid crowded and poorly ventilated areas.
