SA records 756 new COVID-19 cases, 78 deaths

South Africa has recorded 756 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the country’s total cases to 1 546 735.

The death toll has climbed to 52 788 after 78 new deaths were reported.

Most of the new fatalities are from the Gauteng, which has recorded 45 deaths.

“In the last 24 hours, 78 deaths have been reported: Eastern Cape one, Free State seven, Gauteng 45, KwaZulu-Natal nine, Limpopo seven, Mpumalanga four, North West 0, Northern Cape two and Western Cape three; which brings the total to 52 788 deaths. We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased,” says Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize.

Tests and recoveries

South Africa has conducted 9 844 835 tests so far, with 24 842 conducted in the last 24-hour cycle.

The private sector accounts for 56% (5 527 079) of total tests, while the public sector accounts for 44% (4 317 756).

The country’s recoveries stand at 1 473 588, with a recovery rate of 95%.

The number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol currently stands at 251 707.
