SA records 44 more COVID-19 related deaths and 2 539 new cases

The total number of COVID-19 cases in South Africa have increased by 2 539 to 45 973 cases. The Western Cape remains the province with the most cases, accounting for 66.1% of the country’s total cases.

The Eastern Cape has overtaken Gauteng and now has the second-highest COVID-19 cases in the country. The province accounts for 5 629 of total cases while Gauteng has recorded a total of 5 626 cases.

Five confirmed cases remain unaccounted for.

Minister of Health Dr Zweli Mkhize says that the country has seen an increase of 44 COVID-19 related deaths in the last 24 hour cycle. 25 of the new deaths were recorded in the Western Cape, seven in Gauteng, six in KwaZulu-Natal and six others in the Eastern Cape.

The 60-69 age group has recorded the most deaths, accounting for 258 (27.1%) of total fatalities. Only two infant deaths have been recorded.

Males account for 53% of total deaths, while females account for 47%.

Dr Mkhize says despite the increase in the number of fatalities, South Africa’s mortality rate remains at 2%, well below the global average of 6%.

 

A total of 850 871 tests have been conducted in the country so far, 30 196 of them were conducted in the last 24 hour cycle. Of those tests, the public sector has conducted 460 485 (52%) – while the private sector has tested 431 183 (48%) people for COVID-19.

South Africa has recorded 24 258 recoveries, which translates to a recovery rate of 52.8%.
