SA records 21 606 new COVID-19 cases, 399 deaths

South Africa has recorded 21 606 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the country’s total cases to 1 214 176. Gauteng has again reported the highest number of cases provincially, accounting for 27.1% of the country’s total infections.

A total of 399 new deaths have also been reported, bringing the COVID-19 death toll to 32 824.

Most of the new fatalities are from the Eastern Cape, which has recorded 85 new deaths.

“Regrettably, we report a further 399 COVID-19 related deaths: Eastern Cape 85, Free State 11, Gauteng 69, Kwa-Zulu Natal 96, Limpopo five, Mpumalanga 15, Northern Cape 12 and Western Cape 106 . This brings the total deaths to 32 824. We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased,” says Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize.

Tests and recoveries

South Africa has conducted 7 120 847 tests so far, with 77 167 conducted in the last 24-hour cycle.

The private sector accounts for 58% (4 138 584) of total tests, while the public sector accounts for 42% (2 982 263).

The country’s recoveries stand at 956 712 recoveries with a recovery rate of 78.9%.
