SA records 2 759 new COVID-19 cases, 72 deaths

South Africa has recorded 2 759 new coronavirus infections in the last 24-hour cycle, taking the total number to 1 602 031.

The country has also recorded 72 new COVID-19 related fatalities on Wednesday. This brings the total number of deaths to 54 968.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in Gauteng.

“Regrettably, we report 72 more COVID-19 related deaths: Eastern Cape 6, Free State 13, Gauteng 27, Kwa-Zulu Natal 5, Limpopo 0, Mpumalanga 5, North West 0, Northern Cape 4 and Western Cape 12,” says Dr Mkhize.

Recoveries stand at 1 519 734.

The cumulative number of tests conducted to date is 10 968 926.

The number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol to date is 430 730.
