South Africa has recorded 16 366 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the past 24-hours, bringing the total number of cases to 3 020 569.

The test positivity rate remains at around five times the level at which the spread of the virus is said to be under control.

The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported similar figures on Friday.

The total recoveries stand at 2 855 474.

The NICD says 21 people died in the latest 24 hour reporting period as the overall official death toll approaches 90 000.

However, many observers say the real death toll could be as much as three times higher given the number of excess deaths recorded in South Africa since the start of the pandemic.

People are urged to get the vaccine as it is safe and effective against coronavirus.
