SA records 14 858 new COVID-19 cases, 433 deaths

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says 14 858 new COVID-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 342 330.

This increase represents a 26.5% positivity rate. While the positivity rate has declined, the NICD says it is still five times higher than when the spread of the virus is considered to be under control.

The death toll now stands at 68 625 after 433 fatalities were reported overnight.

The majority of new cases on Thursday are from Gauteng (34%), followed by the Western Cape (22%).
