South Africa has recorded 13 251 new COVID-19 cases. A total of 66 244 tests were conducted. 516 deaths have been reported bringing the total to 80 469 deaths.
This increase represents a 20% positivity rate, four times the level at which the spread of the virus is considered to be under control.

Vaccination in mining industry
According to the Minerals Council of South Africa, more than 47 000 mine workers contracted COVID-19 since the outbreak of the pandemic with more than 650 deaths recorded to date.
The Council virtually briefed Parliament’s Select and Portfolio Committees on Mineral Resources and Energy about the vaccination progress in the mining industry.
The Head of Health for the Minerals Council of South Africa, Dr Thuthula Balfour elaborates on how COVID-19 has affected the sector.
“These are our statistics as of yesterday. We have had about 47 500 cases since the beginning of the pandemic in South Africa. And we also had 653 deaths. We still have significant numbers not high but significant numbers of cases,- about a thousand-and 59 cases that are still active because the epidemic the mining sector has also not settled down.”
The Minerals Council of South Africa says more than 120 000 mine workers have been vaccinated.
