South Africa has recorded 1 548 new coronavirus infections in the last 24-hour cycle, taking the total number to 1 599 272.
The country has also recorded 71 new COVID-19 related fatalities on Tuesday. This brings the total number of deaths to 54 896.
In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in the Free State.
“Regrettably, we report 71 more COVID-19 related deaths: Eastern Cape 3, Free State 23, Gauteng 16, Kwa-Zulu Natal 5, Limpopo 0, Mpumalanga 0, North West 0, Northern Cape 16 and Western Cape 8,” says Dr Mkhize.
Recoveries stand at 1 519 258.
The cumulative number of tests conducted to date is 10 931 906.
The number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol to date is 414 372.
