South Africa has recorded 1 250 new coronavirus infections in the last 24-hour cycle, taking the total number to 1 578 450.

The country has also recorded 48 new COVID-19 related fatalities on Wednesday. This brings the total number of deaths to 54 285.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in the North West.

“Regrettably, we report 48 more COVID-19 related deaths: Eastern Cape 11, Free State 4, Gauteng 4, Kwa-Zulu Natal 1, Limpopo 0, Mpumalanga 0, North West 19, Northern Cape 5 and Western Cape 4,” says Dr Mkhize.

Recoveries stand at 1 503 611.

The cumulative number of tests conducted to date is 10 590 107.

The number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol to date is 298 153.
