Athletics South Africa has finalised the selection of three teams to represent South Africa at the 2021 World Athletics Relays taking place on the 1st and 2nd of May at Silesia, in Poland.

The main objective is to prepare for the Olympic Games in Tokyo starting on July 23.

Ukona Khuzwayo from Mangondi, outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo, says he will use the World Athletics Relays to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

“This is a great opportunity for me to represent my country at the World Relay in Poland. This is the first time representing my country and travel abroad. I hope this opportunity will open many doors for me and also help me to achieve my childhood dreams of competing in the Olympics games 2021 and I also thank my coach, my manager.”

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) is confident of South Africa’s participation at this year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, despite the temporary suspension of the Johnson and Johnson coronavirus vaccine roll-out in South Africa.

With just 100 days to go to the opening ceremony and even fewer days to Team South Africa’s departure, Sascoc’s Chief Medical Officer says these games will be like no other.

Athletes will be subjected to COVID-19 tests 72 hours before they depart for Japan, and then every four days once they are in the host city.
