American social activist and media star, Oprah Winfrey, says one of the central lessons contained in the life of Nelson Mandela was the importance of service to the community, especially by women.

She was speaking at a the Is’thunzi Sabafazi or Dignity of Women event hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation at the University of Johannesburg campus in Soweto on Thursday.

Winfrey  has told the large crowd that South Africa needs more people who are dedicated to serving the community.

Meanwhile, former first lady, Graca Machel, says it’s a basic human trait to lend a helping hand to end violence against women and children. Machel says everyone should learn from Madiba.

The event is part of the Nelson Mandela 100 year tribute.
