The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) has called for a multifaceted response to the escalating scourge of Gender-based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in South Africa. This follows its fact-finding mission to the country.

The AU body met with the government, civil society, NGOs and other key stakeholders.

On Friday, the ACHPR’s Rapporteur for Human Rights Commissioner Dr Solomon Ayele Dersso told the media in Pretoria that the country should consider a number of measures to tackle GBV.

Dersso says, “In terms of the protection of women from gender based violence and femicide of course, we recognise that just not law enforcement and security measures are not adequate, cant be the only means to responding to this scourge.”

He adds, “There’s a need for multifaceted intervention but as for those multifaceted interventions, we highlighted the need for addressing the gaps in the law including the need for dealing with gender based violence and ensure there are reported.”
