Reading Time: 2 minutes

Student Vukile Dlamini, who was studying medicine in Ukraine, says it was extremely difficult for them to leave the country.

Dlamini says after leaving her place of study they reached the Romanian border, where it took almost eight hours to get across.

Dlamini describes the emotions she went through when she first heard of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“At first we were very afraid. The Indians at our school were in touch with their embassy, the embassy asked if they could be released. But the teachers would calm us down, we should not worry and nothing major will happen.”

Vukile Dlamini on leaving Ukraine:

Thousands of foreign students studying in Ukraine are now returning home.

Some students from Africa and Asia say their journey has been difficult and made harder by poor treatment.

When asked if she experienced that, Dlamini says, “We did experience that at the border but I just want to make it clear that the Ukrainians are great people. The bus that we took dropped us several kilometers from the border, so we had to walk several kilometres, there were local Ukrainians offering us hot tea and bread so that we do not go hungry.”
