SA marks Freedom Day

Reading Time: < 1 minute

President Jacob Zuma is expected to urge South Africans to value freedom when he delivers the freedom day keynote address at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Monday.

The 27th of April marks the day that South Africa had its first democratic elections in 1994. Twenty one years have passed and many changes have taken place in the country.

The ANC says South Africans will mark the day amid violence that has wrongly portrayed the nation as xenophobic. The party says freedom day takes place when South Africa is reeling from the violent actions of a minority.

The ruling party says it is encouraged by calls for unity and peace since the violence erupted. However, it says the solution lies in addressing both the grievances of foreigners and South Africans.

The party says it will encourage government to speedily introduce reforms on immigration.

Also the African National Congress in the Western Cape, together with civil society organisations, launched a campaign called Africa Unite to address xenophobic issues.
