South Africa has emerged as the 5th hardest working country with workers spending an average of 43 hours per week at work.

A report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) revealed that nearly 12% of the South African workforce spends more than 60 hours per week on the job.

Mine workers, particularly those in production, worked 12 hour shifts, six days a week.

This despite the fact that South African labour laws prohibit workers from working more than 45 hours per week and not more than 10 hours in overtime.

Wholesale and retail came second with workers clocking in an average of 44 point 7 hours per week.

This was followed by finance and business services at 43.7 hours per week.

Transport and communication came in at 43.6 hours per week.

The study found that women were more likely to work shorter hours because they tend to be more educated and work in professional sectors.

Working hours were shorter in more economically thriving provinces in the country such as Gauteng and the Western Cape.
