A South African film, ” Five Tiger “, has been chosen to be screened at the prestigious upcoming Sundance Independent Film Festival in Utah, America next week.

The debut short film in Zulu by Nomawonga Khumalo explores feminism within the religious construct.

It tells the story of a woman whose faith keeps her hope alive for a better life, but in reality does little to change her circumstances.

Set in present-day South Africa, the main character finds herself in a transactional relationship with her church leader as she tries to support her ill husband and daughter.

The countdown has, meanwhile, begun to the announcement early next month of this year’s Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards nominations.

South Africans will be holding both thumbs for two feature films, “Moffie” and the other, “Toorbos” (dream forest) that stand a chance to be nominated for the sought-after prizes.
