The total number of coronavirus tests conducted to date is 4 726 875 .

Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize says the country has enough kits available for coronavirus (COVID-19) testing and that backlogs have been cleared.

South Africa has recorded over 563 000 coronavirus cases since the start of the outbreak, of which 417 000 have recovered.

Over 10 600 people have died from COVID-19 related illnesses.

Mkhize says there are fewer patients checking into hospitals for treatment of COVID-19 symptoms.

“In the past few weeks, the number of people coming into hospitals and clinics with symptoms has drastically reduced because the surge is slowly passing. We don’t have a shortage of kits right now. We phone every day to check what has happened. Right now, no one has got an extra specimen to test. We are now waiting for patients to come in and we don’t have as many patients as we have had in the past month or two simply because there are fewer people getting the infection,” says Mkhize.

In the video below Dr. Mkhize gives an update on COVID-19
