Parliament is currently conducting a two day Men’s Parliament to commemorate International Men’s Day.

The gathering is convened to shine the spotlight on men who are making a positive impact in their communities and aims to draft a common agenda to fight women and child abuse.

Delegates are also on a mission to educate men on diseases affecting them, like prostate cancer.

The theme of this year’s Mens’ Parliament is “Institutionalising a Responsive Mens’ Movement”.

Parliament has also committed to raise awareness about male suicides and domestic violence against men.

The Social Development Department says it wants to launch a “Remember My Name” campaign to record all femicide related deaths.

Deputy Social Development Minister Henrietta Bogopane-Zulu says: “In  taking the country with us we will be ensuring that the Remember My Name campaign is strengthened, so that when we meet and launch the 16 days next year we have a face to femicide.”

Gender Commission Mbuyiselo Botha says:”We must say that all of us have capability. All of us have a role to play when women are battered every day and it is us here this morning, we can’t be nice to each other.”

“We must be uncomfortable in  the spaces when we meet, we must be really uncomfortable that’s only then we’d say there is something wrong about patriarchy and its ugly toxic consequences.”
