RTMC issues stern warning to partygoers

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has issued a stern warning to partygoers that if they are caught drinking and driving they will be arrested.

Many crashes on the country’s roads during the festive season are the result of motorists driving under the influence of alcohol.

RTMC’s Simon Zwane says law enforcers will be out in numbers.

“We will be out ensuring that there is safety everywhere. We are aware of many end of the year festive parties that are taking place. Concerts and parties in the parks and that people are preparing to go to the beachfront particularly around the 26th. Even those going to the beachfront they must designate a sober driver to drive them and let’s make this festive season one to remember.”

The RTMC says it is also concerned about the high number of pedestrian deaths since the start of the festive season. Many of the country’s roads have seen huge volumes of traffic this weekend as holidaymakers make their way to their various destinations around country.

Statistic’s have not been released but Zwane says many pedestrians have been knocked down by vehicles since the beginning of December.

“We are concerned about the high number of pedestrian fatalities and our advice to pedestrians is to please avoid busy roads after drinking alcohol. A high number of people knocked by vehicles are found to have been drinking alcohol. We also advise motorists to be careful when driving around in residential areas that there are many people walking and we must be on the lookout to avoid these unnecessary accidents.”
