Rotterdam members seek Limpopo premier’s intervention in traditional leadership row

Aggrieved community members from Rotterdam, outside Giyani in Limpopo, have marched to the office of premier Stanley Mathabatha to seek his intervention in a traditional leadership row.

The residents under the Duvula Traditional Authority are accusing MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Basikopo Makamu of disbanding their traditional authority. They say he has merged it with the nearby Mahuntsi Tribal Authority.

They say the two traditional authorities have been co-existing independent of each other in Rotterdam for years and they want it to remain that way.

Makamu is locked in a meeting with Duvula community representatives to discuss the issue.

March organiser Justice Makhubela says, “The community members did not receive this very well because it seems like a repetition of apartheid regime tactics they are trying to take from lawful owners and give it to those who are not lawful. So it is the community members who are here not the royal family her submitting the memorandum.”
