The annual OR Tambo marathon in Bloemfontein has been won by Robson Chigara from Zimbabwe.
His compatriot, Loveness Madzira won the woman’s race.
Winner Chigara described the race as very tough: “The race is tough because the weather is too hot, even the course is hard, but you can’t run faster. It’s a good course – the competition was tough, but I managed to win the race. I’m feeling okay because I’ve ran, I should feel tired but when you win the race you can’t feel tired. At the last one kilometre I start cramping, but I just reduced the pace because I was running alone till the finish. I still feeling better but I think the altitude is killing me because it was too hot.”
Despite the decline in the number of the athletes taking part this year, the Department of Sport, arts and culture says the race remains one of their flagship programme.
