The main road leading from the North West capital Mahikeng to the Botswana border has been now been closed by protesters demanding that Premier Supra Mahumapelo resign.
Unrest is sweeping around Mahikeng with many other roads blockaded, malls being closed, schooling and other services disrupted.
A sign of billowing smoke can be seen even from a distance on the Nelson Mandela road in Mahikeng.
Angry residents who have blockaded the road said all they want is for Mahumapelo to resign.
Commuters coming from the town of Mahikeng proceeding to the Ramatlabama- Botswana border post cannot go through due to the blockade.
Police are also stationed at one of the intersections preventing people from passing through.
Police nyalas have also been deployed to disperse the protesters.
