Rev. Jesse Jackson thanks President Ramaphosa for Ghandi walk

US Civil Rights Activist Reverend Jesse Jackson has thanked President Cyril Ramaphosa for inviting him to a morning walk with the people of Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.

He did a 12 kilometre walk with the President and around 10 000 community members during the Ghandi Walk. Other participants included Gauteng Premier David Makhura and the Provincial MEC for Transport Ismail Vadi.

The annual Ghandhi Walk is fast becoming the most sought after events on the fitness calendar.

First it was Ghandi walking for change, then the Women of 1956 emulated him also walking against pass laws. Be it toyi-toying or a service delivery protests, the streets have been pivotal in effecting change throughout history.

President Ramaphosa clocked in 12-kilometres. “I’ve been longing to do this for years it’s a good memory of Mahatma Ghandi and the role he played in our struggle. It’s a whole contribution of key people who played the role in our struggle. All this add up to making our whole movement of progress in the new dawn,” said beaming Ramaphosa.

Late struggle stalwart Laaloo Chiba was also honoured. “Laloo walked every walk until its inception this is the first one in 3 decades that he won’t be part of it,” said Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Neeshan Balton.

For many, the walk was a reminder of the man dubbed the icon of peace.

The walk  also attracted fitness fanatics.
