North West Human Settlements MEC Lenah Miga has urged the Mahikeng Local Municipality to ensure that retailers comply with occupational health and safety regulations.

This follows a fire that destroyed several shops in Station Road in the city on Friday.

The incident comes two years after a fire gutted several shops in a shopping complex across the same road due to illegal electricity connections.

Miga says the municipality should play its part in ensuring that shop owners comply.

“The municipality must strengthen their area of ensuring that they do much of their work in terms of monitoring and ensuring that shops around town comply in terms of electricity and other related matters. Let’s then get to a point where we ensure that the municipality plays a critical role in ensuring that these issues of connections and compliance in terms of occupational health and safety,” says Miga.
