Reading Time: < 1 minute

Hundreds of residents from the Drommedaris informal settlement in Paarl in the Western Cape say that they’ve lost everything they own in a fire that ripped through their homes and they are now slowly starting to rebuild.

Humanitarian relief organisation Gift of the Givers has been on the ground helping to rebuild about 100 structures that were gutted.

They also distributed food and water to about 400 people.

Reporter Athule Joka, “We’ve been here since the morning, watching people trying to salvage the remnants of what is left on their shacks, which happened on Friday night after the fires gutted over hundred of their homes. More than 400 people are left homeless. We were talking to some of them earlier on, they were telling us that some of them are living in halls. The Gift of the Givers, they just left now, they brought mattresses, they brought blankets, they also brought warm food and some water for hydration.”
