The Human Sciences Research Council has revealed that stress among men having sex with each other contributes to an increased risk of HIV.

This follows the conclusion of a study conducted among gay men in South Africa and Namibia.

Research Professor, Heide van Rooyen, says stress is caused by stigma, social isolation and hostility. She was speaking at a media briefing in Cape Town.
She says the study recommends enhanced mental healthcare that strengthens coping mechanism.

Van Rooyen says it’s also important to make public health spaces friendlier to men in same sex relationships.
