Correctional Services Spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo says remission can only be granted by the president, which is similar to pardoning someone.
On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that he has granted a special 12 month remission of sentence to specific categories of sentenced criminal offenders, probationers and parolees to mark Reconciliation Day.
Speaking on Morning Live, Nxumalo says remission is similar to pardoning someone.
He says, “The president may decide to pardon or remit a sentence, so remission in simple English is reducing a sentence, hence the president mentioned that the remission will be for 12 months.
