On the 2nd of April one of the country’s celebrated struggle icons and mother of the nation, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela died after a short illness.
Madikizela Mandela passed away at the age of 81 at the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. Her health had deteriorated over the last few years. She suffered from diabetes and underwent several major surgeries.
Madikizela-Mandela was the ex-wife of former president Nelson Mandela. She held several government positions and headed the African National Congress Women’s League.
