Registration officers at Univen abandon work

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Registration officers at the University of Venda on Monday abandoned the temporary registration centre at the university entrance because of “unruly” applicants.

The officials allege that applicants were unruly, failing to obey instructions to queue orderly. The situation left applicants, including some with disabilities stranded.

Limpopo Chairperson of the EFF Students’ Command Mandla Shikwambana promised angry applicants at the University of Venda that the problem will be resolved soon.

Hundreds of applicants across the country are making their way to prospective institutions of higher learning hoping to be accepted at the eleventh hour.

Many of them stood in the sun for hours, waiting to register.

The heat wave being experienced in many parts of the country has taken its toll on the applicants. Some applicants collapsed as result of the heat and exhaustion and were taken to the university’s clinic after standing for hours in temperatures reaching up to 38 °C.

Some of those applying for admission have expressed their frustration.

“People are coming from far, far away; some are from Mpumalanga; some are from Gauteng; and now there is nothing that is happening; and is very bad and is hot outside; there is no one in here. They are all inside. They said they can’t help us. I came here by 5 o’clock in the morning. So, I feel very disappointed,” says one applicant on the queue.
