Reds upset Lions in Super Rugby match

The Reds pulled-off an upset to down the Lion 27-22 in a Super Rugby match played at the Suncorp stadium, Brisbane Australia. In the other two early fixtures South African time, Jaguares edged the Blues 20-13, while the Crusaders beat the Brumbies by 21-8.

The Lions went into the game with high expectations, especially after their 29-nil win against the Waratahs last week.

However, it was the home side that got off to a great start, Jean-Pierre Smith scored the game’s first try from the back of the line out drive.

The Reds had only managed to score a single first-half try in their last four fixtures. However, they crossed the whitewash three more times against the Lions in Brisbane to lead by 24-nil at the break.

The Lions staged a fight back after the interval, also scoring four answered tries however that was not enough as they lost by 27-22.

Lions Captain Franco Mostert congratulated the team.

“Ja first of all congratulations to them. I think they wanted it more than us. They deserved to win. The Reds is a good side, first-half their defence we couldn’t do nothing against them. So yes like I said they wanted it more than us.”

In another Super Rugby match that produced a stellar upset on Saturday, the Jaguares made history by beating the Blues 20-13 at a wet and windy Eden Park.

The touring side were there first to cross the try line courtesy Agustin Creevy, however that five point lead was soon overturned the Blues scoring two tries to take a 13-5 lead to the break.

The Argentinian outfit comeback strong in the second half, scoring to two try while keeping the Blues scoreless to claim their first win against a New Zealand outfit.

In a contest involving the Crusaders and Brumbies, the defending champions from New Zealand outscored their Australian counterpart by three tries to one to claim a 21-8 win.
