Reading Time: < 1 minute

Agang SA leader, Mamphela Ramphele says she will head to court if Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairperson, Pansy Tlakula does not resign by the end of the week.

Speaking in Uitenhage, Ramphele said a multi-party forum of opposition parties has given the electoral body leader an ultimatum to vacate her position for the sake of free and fair elections.

Tlakula has been implicated in possible maladministration regarding the leasing of the IEC’s head office in Centurion.

Ramphele says, “We believe that we have given her seven days to resign. If she doesn’t, we are going to approach the courts because we are the custodians of South African people, their voice must not be diluted by impropriety. That corruption, it matters. So, end of this week will be the end of the seven days.”

IEC workers have also threatened to strike unless Tlakula is removed. Organisers of the strike claim they are supported by up to 90% of IEC employees. IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela has meanwhile said commission employees are barred from striking as their services have been declared essential.. – Additional reporting by Sapa
