Ramaphosa in Zimbabwe for consultative meetings

President Cyril Ramaphosa has held talks with his counterpart, President Emmerson Mngangagwa. The two leaders focused on strong bilateral relations, political, economic and social relations.

President Ramaphosa is visiting regional leaders as part of consultation after being elected South Africa’s president last month.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in the Zimbabwean capital Harare for a consultative meeting with his counterpart President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

This follows his visit to Mozambique earlier on Saturday where he held talks with President Filipe Nyusi.

The meeting aims to strengthen economic and political relations between the two countries.

A meeting of two leaders whose countries have just undergone political transition.

After 37 years, under the former veteran leader’s Robert Mugabe rule, Zimbabwe is trying to rebuild its economy as the country was previously affected by economic decline and a redress on the human rights. The leader says, it cant be business as usual, and the country is on a new path.

Pretoria says it stands ready to assist.

As elections draw near, even the UN has extended its assistance.

The two leaders are both expected to attend the AU Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, next week, where the proposed reforms on AU are expected to be discussed.

SADC has previously raised concerns on some of the proposals. But the regional body has made a commitment to support the process as soon as the concerns have been addressed.

Ramaphosa is also the Chair of the SADC regional body.

He is accompanied by the Minister of International Relations and Co-operation, Lindiwe Sisulu and State Security Minister Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba.
