Ramaphosa visits Tembisa residents

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A shack fire broke out in an informal settlement of Tembisa, east of Johannesburg, while President Cyril Ramaphosa was addressing residents as part of the ANC’s Thuma Mina campaign.

Not far from the area where Ramaphosa was speaking to residents regarding their concerns about a lack of electricity, housing and jobs, a shack caught fire suspected to have been caused by a primus stove.

Meanwhile the Democratic Alliance has weighed in on the incident accusing Ramaphosa hypocrisy saying he turned his back on the blaze.

The governing party’s Thuma Mina campaign is aimed at improving service delivery in communities and has also been seen as part of electioneering ahead of 2019 elections.

“At the time when the President was in Duduza he was not aware of what the smoke or the cause of the smoke was but we understand that a part of his entourage stayed behind and later found out that there was a shack burning and those members of the entourage then waited until the Emergency Services came through.”
